Join our Nest Egg Club ~ include the Kalmiopsis Audubon Society in your estate or retirement planning

Would you like your support of Kalmiopsis Audubon Society to have a lasting impact towards the protection of our precious South Coast for future generations?

If so, you may wish to join the Kalmiopsis Audubon Society (KAS) Nest Egg Club by including our chapter in your estate or retirement planning. By making a planned gift to KAS, you can help build a lasting legacy of advocacy efforts to sustain the beauty and environmental health of our region.

Planned Giving Options:

Bequests

The most common way to make a planned gift to a nonprofit is by leaving a bequest through your will or revocable trust. Simply include language in your document stating that you “bequeath ($ amount) to the Kalmiopsis Audubon Society, a not-for-profit organization located at P.O. Box 1265, Port Orford, Oregon 97465 (federal tax ID #93-1018752) for its ongoing conservation and education programs.”

Donors often choose a bequest because it does not affect assets or cash flow during their lifetime. You can change the provisions in your will or trust at any time. There is no minimum gift required; you may leave a gift of any amount. Your gift is also fully deductible for federal estate tax purposes, and there is no limit on the deduction your estate can claim. In addition, the gift is usually exempt from state inheritance taxes.

If you’d like, you can let us know that you have bequeathed a gift to KAS so we may thank you. Of course, your gift will remain anonymous unless you wish to be openly acknowledged.

Retirement Plans

Your IRA or 401-K can easily be turned into a charitable gift. You may designate KAS as the recipient of some or all of your annual Required Minimum Deduction (RMD) and avoid being taxed on it as income. You may also designate KAS as the beneficiary of your IRA upon your death. You must instruct the custodian of your IRA to do either of these. To avoid being taxed the RMD check must go to KAS and not to you, so you will need to provide the custodian the KAS federal tax ID number (#93-1018752), state that we are a non-profit, and provide our address.

Donations Through Qualified Charitable Distributions

You can also donate using a “qualified charitable distribution” or QCD. This strategy can help to reduce your tax burden while increasing your giving power.

Here’s how it works: Individuals, 72 or older, must take required minimum distributions (RMD) each year from their tax-deferred retirement accounts. These funds become part of taxable income. However, part or all of your RMD can be designated as a QCD. A QCD is a direct transfer from your IRA payable directly to a qualified charity, such as KAS. QCD funds are excluded from your taxable income. There are several good reasons to make a QCD: it allows you to reduce your income when taking a standard deduction; it may place you in a lower tax bracket; it may reduce the amount of Social Security benefits subject to taxes; or it may reduce your potential exposure to Medicare surtax. Consult your tax advisor regarding your specific situation.

Here are a few rules to keep in mind: You must be at least 70 ½ years old at the time of the QCD request. The funds must be withdrawn from your IRA by your RMD deadline, generally December 31 each year. Funds must be transferred directly from your IRA custodian to Kalmiopsis Audubon. (A check made directly to you will not qualify as a QCD and will be considered taxable income.) Contact your IRA custodian for more information about QCDs and how to initiate the process. And if you have any further questions, please contact KAS Treasurer Sara Lovendahl at saralovendahl@charter.net.  We thank you for considering ways to financially support Kalmiopsis Audubon.

There are other ways to give to KAS for the long term – such as naming KAS as the beneficiary of your life insurance policy, leaving appreciated stocks or Certificates of Deposits (CDs) to KAS, or even leaving certain types of real estate to our organization.

Whether you choose to leave a bequest, designate KAS as the recipient of your IRA Required Minimum Distributions or as the beneficiary of a Life Insurance policy, donate a CD, gift appreciated stocks or mutual funds, or make a gift of real estate, your planned gift is a wonderful way to make an enduring contribution to the Kalmiopsis Audubon Society.

Your gift can help provide for continuing stewardship of the South Coast’s extraordinary forests, rivers, and coastlines into the future, while taking advantage of federal and state tax laws.

We encourage you to consult your financial advisor and tax preparer as you consider making a planned gift to any charitable organization.
